Designed for enterprises to cost-effectively migrate from Gigabit EtherChannel in the distribution layer and core backbone to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. This module features a 40 Gbps interconnection to the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Supervisor Engine 720 switch fabric with support for up to thirty-two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports per chassis.
Field-upgradable daughtercards provide a flexible and scalable approach to implementing centralized forwarding (CEF), distributed local forwarding (dCEF) and in the future, acelerated local forwarding (aCEF). The module is fully IEEE 802.3ae standards compliant and features industry-standard Xenpak modular optics, which are "hot-swappable" for flexibility and serviceability.

Distributed Forwarding 48 Mpps per slot for interface modules upgraded with DFCs; sustained system performance of up to 400 Mpps per system
Accelerated Forwarding (aCEF): Peak performance up to 400 Mpps per system; 48 Mpps per slot (based on 4-port density)
Maximum Port Density/Chassis:
20 ports (13-slot)
32 ports (9-slot)
Fabric connections:
Dual 20-Gbps serial channel connections to Supervisor 720's switch fabric
Slot requirements:
Can occupy any slot in any Cisco Catalyst 6506, 6509, 6509-NEB-A chassis; Can only occupy slots 9 through 13 in a Cisco Catalyst 6513 chassis
